Type faster by speaking
Most people speak at around 130 words per minute but type at about 40. Voice typing closes that gap. Press the mic, talk naturally, and your words appear in the text box as you go. It is ideal for emails, essays, notes, social posts and first drafts.
There is nothing to install and no account to create. Open the page in Chrome or Edge, allow the microphone, and start speaking.
How to use voice typing
- Pick your language. Choose the language and accent you will speak in from the dropdown.
- Press the mic button. Allow microphone access when your browser asks. The dot turns red while listening.
- Speak clearly. Grey text shows what is being heard. It turns into normal text once each phrase is finished.
- Add punctuation with your voice. Say "comma", "full stop" or "new paragraph" as you talk.
- Press the button again to stop. Then edit, copy or download your text.
Voice commands
These commands work when the language is set to any type of English:
- "full stop" or "period" adds a full stop.
- "comma" adds a comma.
- "question mark" and "exclamation mark" add those marks.
- "colon" adds a colon.
- "new line" starts a new line.
- "new paragraph" adds a blank line and starts a new paragraph.
The first letter of each sentence is capitalised for you.
Great uses for voice typing
- Emails and messages. Speak a reply, tidy it up, then paste it into Gmail, Outlook, Slack or WhatsApp Web.
- Essays and reports. Get your first draft down quickly, then edit with the keyboard.
- Blog posts and scripts. Talk through your ideas as if you were explaining them to a friend.
- Accessibility. Helpful for people with RSI, dyslexia or limited mobility who find typing hard.
- Language practice. See how well the browser understands your pronunciation in a new language.
Voice typing and privacy
We want to be clear about how this tool works. Voice typing uses the Web Speech API, a speech service built into your browser. In Chrome and Edge, this service may send your audio to Google or Microsoft servers to recognise the words. voicedesktop never receives your audio or your text, and we do not store anything you dictate.
If you need your audio to stay completely on your device, use our private tools instead. Record with the online voice recorder, then transcribe it with the audio to text converter. Both run fully inside your browser.
Tips for accurate voice typing
- Use a good microphone. A headset mic beats a laptop mic. Check yours with our mic test.
- Speak in full phrases. The service uses context, so short complete phrases work better than single words.
- Reduce background noise. Turn off fans, music and TVs nearby.
- Choose the right accent. English (UK) and English (India) can be more accurate than English (US) for those accents.
- Edit as you go. Click in the text to fix a word, then keep talking from there.
Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support voice typing?
Voice typing works in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows, Mac, ChromeOS and Android. Safari and Firefox do not fully support live speech recognition yet. If your browser is not supported, you will see a notice, and you can use our audio to text converter instead.
Is voice typing free?
Yes. It is free with no signup and no word limit. Type as much as you like.
Where does my voice go when I use voice typing?
Voice typing uses the speech service built into your browser. In Chrome and Edge, that service may send your audio to Google or Microsoft to turn it into text. We never receive your audio or your text. If you need everything to stay on your device, record your voice and use our audio to text converter, which runs fully offline after loading.
How do I add punctuation with my voice?
When the language is set to English, say "full stop" or "period", "comma", "question mark", "exclamation mark" or "colon". Say "new line" to start a new line, or "new paragraph" for a blank line. Sentences are capitalised automatically.
Why does voice typing stop by itself?
Browsers end listening after a long pause. This tool restarts automatically while the mic button shows a red dot. If it still stops, press the mic again. A stable internet connection also helps.
Can I edit the text while I speak?
Yes. Click anywhere in the text box to move the cursor. New words are inserted where the cursor is, so you can fix a sentence and carry on talking.
Which languages can I type in?
Choose from more than 20 languages and accents in the dropdown, including English (US, UK, Australia and India), Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali and Chinese. Pick the one you speak for the best accuracy.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Your text stays in the page until you copy it, download it or close the tab. Remember to save it before you leave.
